S2E7: The Grease Monkey’s Biscuits: Jessica Wilkins’ Empowering Story of Grit From Navy Engineer to Culinary Genius | Part 1
The creator of the most mouth-watering biscuits in Spotsylvania, Virginia found her start in the depths of a Naval Destroyer Ship.
Join Maggie for an inspiring conversation with Jessica Wilkins—mother, Navy veteran, and owner of The Biscuit Batch in Spotsylvania. Jessica’s journey is anything but ordinary. From working as a gas turbine mechanic in 135-degree engine rooms aboard a naval destroyer in Pearl Harbor to secretly baking biscuits for fellow sailors during deployment, her story is one of resilience, reinvention, and unexpected passion. What started as a creative escape in the Navy would eventually become the foundation for a thriving culinary career.
Before biscuits, there were bold dreams of fashion design inspired by shows like Project Runway and ambitions to attend FIDM. Raised in California by two LAPD parents, Jessica’s path took several sharp turns—from interior design to military service to culinary school—each chapter shaping the woman and entrepreneur she would become. Along the way, she faced cultural challenges, racism, single motherhood, and the emotional aftermath of a medical discharge from the military. Yet through every setback, baking remained the one constant calling her forward.
In this episode, Jessica opens up about identity, discipline, motherhood, and what it really takes to start over in your early twenties. This is a story about grit, growth, and discovering your purpose. Be sure to tune in next week for Part Two, where they dive into Jessica’s appearances on Food Network’s Chopped and Cutthroat Kitchen, and how she built a beloved restaurant brand in Virginia, known as The Biscuit Batch.
